When should I see my orthodontist?
Canadian Association of Orthodontics and American Association of Orthodontic recommend that every child visits the Orthodontist by age 7. Early intervention frequently makes the completion of treatment at a later age easier and less time consuming.
In most cases by age 7 first permanent molars and anterior teeth are present in the mouth and the child is mature enough to handle any necessary treatment. In addition the growth of the jaws is not complete therefore treatments that correct jaw growth are still effective. Orthodontic treatment at this stage is called phase 1 treatment.
Adolescents can take advantage of orthodontic treatment to improve their smile, bite, and facial balance. The age to start treatment can vary in individuals depending on their growth and tooth eruption timing. Therefore it is never too early or late to consult with your orthodontist.
Adult orthodontic treatment can be performed at any age as long as the health of the gums and teeth are confirmed. Advances in dental science enable us with more esthetic options to perform orthodontic treatment with least impact on a busy career of an adult patient.
